Read a FREE Excerpt From "It's Not PMS, It's You" (Sterling, 2010)

Excerpt from Chapter 5, The F-Word (No, Not That One), wherein we learn that men and women see the point of conversation very, very differently:

… On the other hand, this ability we women have to mull over a problem or discuss our feelings freely and without needing to come to a solution is something that men truly do find totally perplexing.   They really don’t get our appreciation of conversation for conversation’s sake.

Jason and Fran were spending a quiet evening together one night when Fran asked Jason to sit down and watch the television show “Sex and the City” with her.  After they had watched half of the episode, Fran could see that Jason was clearly having trouble following the story line:

Jason:  So when does something actually happen?

Fran:  Something did happen.  They had drinks and talked, and then they went shopping.

Jason:  But what actually happened?  Nothing got resolved.

Fran:  What needed to be resolved?

Jason:  Didn’t she have a problem with her boyfriend?

Fran:  Yes.

Jason:  So why didn’t they help her solve it?

Fran:  She didn’t want them to solve it.  She just wanted to them to listen to her.

Jason:  You mean I just spent the last 20 minutes watching them talk about what an ass her boyfriend is and the only thing they made an actual decision about was to go shoe shopping?

Fran:  Pretty much.

(Jason’s head explodes.)

I’m just kidding about that last part.  But I’ve been around a lot of guys and I’m not kidding when I say that from what I’ve seen, the whole purpose of a group of men getting together to discuss their feelings is to figure out how to end it as quickly as possible so they don’t have to discuss their feelings anymore.  Any meeting of this kind follows a strictly defined procedure, leading to an efficient and immediate resolution of the problem, mainly so they can move on to more important topics, like why the Yankees have no pitching.

I second Deb. Catch this man while you can!

As to the excerpt, this is a valuable lesson in Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus. That said, even an alien would find the latest Sex and the City movie baffling.

    Ethan –

    A) Glad to hear they finally got the decent pitching out of the bullpen and onto the field since I wrote that.

    B & C) Yuh-huh. You don’t see the connection there? Really? 😉

    D) He’s single, Jewish and a doll to boot, ladies. Just saying.

    A) The Yankees’ pitching–with some exceptions, notably in the bullpen–has been outstanding this year.

    B) I’ve yet to meet an emotional issue more critical than a obtaining an in-depth understanding of the Yankees’ season and how amazing it is that we’ve finally caught up to the @#$& Devil Rays.

    C) I’m single.

    D) Hmm……
